What is a Personal Trainer, and What Makes a Good One? by the 4D Personal Trainer in Barnes SW13

There are very good reasons why the number of people using personal trainers has exploded in the last 10 years. When 4D Fitness started in 1998, using personal training as a means to achieve goals was a niche and mostly elite idea. That is without doubt no longer true! People from all walks of life, all income brackets, all age groups and every location are turning to personal trainers to achieve any number of different goals. Personal trainers can help achieve weight loss, weight gain, muscle tone, improved sports performance – but just as importantly they can also help with areas like health, energy levels, motivation, confidence, mental health, pain management and much more.

Most personal trainers limit their focus to the muscles and the skeleton. A good personal trainer must build into their programmes techniques that effect the other systems of the human body. So much more can be achieved by a trainer who understands the nervous system, the endocrine (hormonal) system, the pulmonary (breathing) system, the digestive, immune and lymphatic systems. All 4D personal trainers are given an understanding of these systems, and a toolkit of solutions for improving them. This is one of the elements that makes 4D personal trainers amongst the best in the industry.

For Example

Proprioception

The body has 3 balance mechanisms:

1. The Eyes – in a fairly obvious way, the eyes are constantly telling the brain whether the room is the right way up or not, and if our environment is stable/tilting/etc..

2. The Ears – there are tiny spirit levels in the ears that send feedback to the brain about our movement status, such as acceleration/deceleration, tilt, etc..

3. The Proprioceptive System – this can be thought of as a series of telegraph wires running up and down the body, constantly sending feedback to the brain, and receiving instructions about necessary muscle contractions to maintain stability and control of movement.

The function of proprioceptive systems in general in the west is deteriorating. We often become too reliant on our eyes, and our lifestyles are simply too stable to maintain good proprioceptive function. We either sit at work, sit on a train, sit in a car, or even if we do walk, it is on hard, flat, predictable surfaces that offer no proprioceptive stimulation.

Loss of proprioceptive function means increased risk of injury, decreased movement skills and hence metabolism, decreased sports performance, decreased core function – the list is long! A good personal trainer, and all 4D trainers, know how to build proprioceptive stimulation into your workout programme and lifestyle. You often won’t know your doing it, but your body will and the benefits will be significant.

There are many, many examples like this where really good personal trainers can deliver benefits way beyond the expectations of a client. In most cases training that takes these factors into account will also be much more effective in terms of weight loss, body tone and aesthetics that are the initial motivation for most of us to do some exercise!

4D Personal Training – That Little Extra Something

The relationship that develops between trainer and trainee is unique. A good personal trainer gains the trust and confidence of a client in a way that offers huge benefits. As somebody that is completely separate from the social circles of a client, but often gets to know the client, and family, extremely well, the trainer can be a sounding board, a health advisor and an unbiased confidant. And more importantly can use the tools of exercise, nutrition, postural correction and lifestyle change to help the client manage and overcome any problem. When the trainer does their job well, the sessions that they spend with their clients become a calm in the storm, and an opportunity to recharge the batteries with a positivity that expands into every area of their lives. A trainer that focuses themselves only on the physical techniques of training, and neglects the mental side, is severely limiting their effectiveness.
